I have bought and sold with Mercari a few times. It would help if Mercari would just have a blurb on all there items sold 'if there is a dispute about an odor with the item then the buyer is on their own.' I felt insulted and sidelined. I hope more buyers leave their feedback so others like myself will not waste time buying on this site. In one message he told me that it must have aquired the odor in the mail and he could not be held responsible. Mercari management was ineffectual and allowed this seller to misrepresent his item and refuse to even consider the problem. I wouldn't have minded if they said send them the package and let them see if it smelled but 'they could not determine anything by the photos.' I closed my account and will not recommend them to my friends or anyone. The final message I got was a copy of the Mercari message saying 'return request denied' with 'have a great day.' The entire process was insulting and a great waste of time. Add to this the seller rudely kept reply to all our messages 'have a great day' even asked that he stop. Even though the seller description said 'smoke free' I was told they would not issue a return and they could look into no futher. According to their policy they could not determine anything was wrong (imagine no smells from a photograph). I took it up with Mercari and was told to send them pictures. I was told that his was a smoke free home and the item had been stored in a plastic tub.

I honestly just thought the seller made a mistake and asked to return it. When it arrived it smelled of cigarettes. Having purchased similar figures that contained a cigarette smell I looked for sellers who state that they know their items do not. Purchased a vinyl collectible Godzilla figure from a seller that listed the item 'from a smoke free home'.
